Justin here. I'm reviewing The Ring Two, the sequel to the American remake of the Ring, starring Naomi Watts, David Dorfman, Simon Baker and Sissy Spacek. The sequel was directed by Hideo Nakata, who directed the original Japanese version of the first one. The story involves Rachel Keller and her son Aiden trying to get past the events of the first film by moving to a new location when they discover that the video tape has been copied again and Rachel discovers that the ghost of Samara is now haunting Aiden. I remember when I first watched this film in theaters with my cousin Kenny when it first came out. I remember enjoying it but after watching it again, I feel like it has not held up over the years. I have mixed feelings with this one. I didn't find it scary with all of the cheap jump scares that kept occurring throughout like every horror film nowadays, I didn't care for the Simon Baker character in the least and I kept wondering how the hell Samara came back this time because it's never explained how she is haunting Aiden when the tape was destroyed. I also didn't like the way the CGI looked in a lot of scenes, especially the deer scene when they attack the car. It looked like it wasn't even fully rendered with the way the animals looked. I do have some pros though. I still enjoyed Naomi Watts' performance as Rachel again and how she tries desperately to save Aiden and she was very reserved. I also enjoyed David Dorfman's performance as Aiden. He was creepy in parts when he becomes possessed by Samara and it was at least different that they tried a possession plot this time instead of just trying to survive for seven days. I also liked the additional backstory they dig into with Samara as we learn more about her mother, Evelyn. I liked the climax as well and I felt like it gave it a proper closure to the story. Overall, I just thought this one was just forgettable at best and it's nowhere near as good as the first one. I'm going to give The Ring Two at 5/10.
