Jane Got a Gun Review

Justin here. I'm reviewing the western/action film Jane Got a Gun, starring Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton, Ewan McGregor and Noah Emmerich. It is directed by Gavin O'Connor (who also directed Warrior and The Accountant). The story involves Jane Hammond who sees her husband Bill come home one day with bullet injuries. She finds out that John Bishop (Ewan McGregor) is looking for Bill and she decides to take matters into her own hands by defending her home. Her former lover Dan (Joel Edgerton) also decides to help her out and the film deals with flashbacks involving their past and how they came across John Bishop. I have to be honest, this is one of the most standard, by the numbers westerns that I've ever watched. Every character is such a walking cliche' of stuff that I've seen countless times in better movies and I didn't really feel anything out of this. Jane tries to be a bad-ass at first, but then throughout the rest of the film, it stays inconsistent at times to the point where it loses focus toward the end when the climax takes place. I also found Ewan McGregor really miscast as the villain. He was so one-note to the point that I kept wondering if he was going to be twirling that weird mustache he has. Not to mention, he wasn't even intimidating in the least or have any motive that's clear whatsoever. There are some pros that I have though. I liked a small flashback they used involving the character of Bill, but I felt like it wasted it's potential with where the film was going. I do love the cinematography on how they capture the old West and some of the exterior and interior shots they use throughout. I also thought the shootouts were descent in a couple of parts, but they could've been so much more brutal and intense. Portman and Edgerton give descent performances, but, the movie was so forgettable that not even they could save it. I'm going to give this a 5/10. I'd rather listen to Janie's Got a Gun by Aerosmith than watch this again.
